Default Tax on 'peace and quiet'

First it was taxing solar cells with increased council tax in the UK. Now
it's taxing living near public transportation or where there is peace and
quiet or a good view or a low crime rate.... or just about anything
desirable it appears. They are even going to tax having thermopane
windows it appears. (trying to stop people from saving money by saving
energy I guess) It would appear that the UK is trying to tax people into
living in slums.

Tax on 'peace and quiet' revealed

By Melissa Kite, Deputy Political Editor, Sunday Telegraph
Last Updated: 1:17am GMT 19/02/2007

Living near a bus stop or corner shop and even enjoying "peace and quiet"
will lead to a hike in council tax for householders, under Government plans.

The tax on "nice neighbourhoods" is being planned as part of the council
tax revaluation, with proposals expected within weeks.

Secret manuals by the Valuation Office Agency, an arm of HM Revenue and
Customs, used in the controversial 2005 council tax revaluation in Wales,
reveal that many homes near shops and public transport, with pleasant
views and in quiet locations were penalised, with higher council tax
bills. There are now plans for the same system to be rolled out across
England.

<...>

Home owners and tenants will be charged hundreds, and possibly thousands,
of pounds extra if they live in a locality deemed by ministers and
officials to be more desirable than others. The rises could be as great
as four times, sending some bills from £1,000 to £4,000.

The manual shows that even mobile homes were given higher council tax
bills for being located in a quiet spot or near conveniences.

Inspectors were instructed to take photographs of the homes, logging the
"convenience to local services, such as shops, bus routes, local
communities".

<...>

Caroline Spelman MP, the shadow local government secretary, said:
"Council tax is literally becoming a tax on a civilised society. This is
the hallmark of an oppressive and greedy government - finding ever more
stealthy ways to tax working families and pensioners."

I'm a little confused here - with all the dumb-ass ideas pouring out
of the UK government lately, do they want to lose the next election to
the Conservations by only a huge margin, or do they want to lose in a
historic blowout?
Will the handful of Labour politicians left after the next election
end up joining the Lib- Dems to hide from their current policies

It's plain old socialism/COMMUNISM,where the idea is to take from people
who have earned a better life and transfer it to those who didn't earn it.

The more people they put on the "dole",the more people they have to vote
for them. Otherwise, the Conservatives would cut their "income".

Of course, that kills any incentive people have for working harder for
themselves.

Hard to say.

Tony Blair seems to have completely lost touch with reality. I guess he caught
it from GWB.

You appear to be under the erroneous impression that unemployment here is high.

"socialism/COMMUNISM" is just one set of names, of a concept to get
masses to accept control and the consolidation of wealth in the hands of
the few. The goal is a return to a system of nobility more or less. Where
the lords/kings/whatever have everything and the people have nothing and
depend upon the noble for their existance.

Another is the system that cons the other half of the political football
game in the name of 'free trade' which is anything but. Rather it's the
concentration of market power and monopoly. Government and connected
corporations working together to end the middle class and their
competition.

I tend to question whether GWB was ever in tough with reality to begin
with, much less to have lost touch with it....
