All Metal Key
I have a Saturn Ion 2007 with the standard key. You know the type:
half metal - half rubber/plastic at the head. This is the second time the head is breaking apart and I dont want to lose it when it falls off my keychain so I am curious if theres a place I can go to have the key made - ALL METAL The dealership says they can only make standard keys - half metal, plastic head |

Did you check with a locksmith? I'm not talking about the keys you get
duplicated at the hardware store. A dealer will only sell you what the factory offers. Not very much independent thinking... I am not sure who made the blank, but obviously they are available for those Saturn's that don't have the chip in the key. |

All Metal Key
The guy who owns a repair shop next door to my office comes to see me about
'specials' since I'm an electrical engineer. His daughter's GM car had a key with a 'chip' in it. the chip turned out to be a simple resistor and there are four (iirc) resistances that are commonly used. Problem was that the contacts that engaged the key's resistor were damaged. Replacing the entire lock cylinder/ignition switch would require removing the dash panel - about a half day's work. Only problem was the circuit to the key's resistor so we decided to cut those wires and splice in a separate resistor under the dash. This reduced the security somewhat but was a 15 minute fix as opposed to a half day. Can use a generic key now... If not, you can get your key duplicated at any hardware store; I have an all-metal key for my wife's '02 SL2. -- Bert Hyman St. Paul, MN |

Thanks, Oppie. You don't have a magic cure for my daughter's 2008 Dodge Caliber's annoying horn-chirp on locking the doors .. Following the exact procedure in the owners manual - doesn't work - a google search reveals the same issue on many 2007-08 Calibers .... ... some work .. some don't. Duh ! .. just a shot. asking here in the Saturn group. John T. Sorry, not a clue on that one.
Recommend you check the Dodge forums and also look up any Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) that might apply. Might be a different software level that is in the BCM that controls these things. If that's the case, you may be stuck going to have a dealer update it. Do your homework first though. Yep - thanks for the reply. It was the Dodge forums that said certain vehicles had to have it done at the dealer ... no explanation, though. They suggested that the dealer would do it for free - during some other service job. .. it's the dumbest annoying thing - to have a horn-chirp - every time - when locking the doors ! Our Taurus chirps on pressing the door-lock button a second time - that isn't necessary very often. I had 3 sets made at the local hardware shop. The store owner looked
at my Saturn key and pulled out 3 blanks and had them cut in about 3 minutes. Verses the 30 minutes wait at the dealership for one key. Amazing!!!
