completely OT!
I know we have some serious computer nerds here, and I say that
affectionately, even jealously ;-) Microsoft, in their own form of brilliance (stupidity really!), when XP changed to Vista, Outlook Express was dropped in favor of 'Microsoft Mail' which, is about the same but just enough different to be a 'pain in the arse'. Didn't make any sense to me but now, in Windows 7 they make another move that makes about as much sense, they've dropped the mail program completely as close as I can tell. Can I get recommendations on (preferably) free software for sending and receiving email and newsgroups? I appreciate your input! Chris 99BBB |

It's a much better email program than outlook express. Doesn't come on the W7 disk - you need to d/l it. I use live mail for email, thunderbird for newsgroups. |

I will admit/agree that some versions were susceptible, to the point that I used an MS unreleased "stripped" version for some time with XP. Back then, I was one of the longer term real MS MVPs, from the compuserve days until 2004. Too many other concerns, including health to continue. The older longer term MVPs as I was, were given annual subscriptions to MSN Universal and a full TecNet subscription, as well as a free MSN "executive" account. Windows "call home for help" is an outgrowth of an idea and suggestion I made in 1999 at Redmond. I also regret the abandonment of O.E., and have gone to Thunderbird for daily use in Win7 and Vista. I do have outlook 07, but seldom use it. I used to like O.E. because it had the ability to read and display raw source, headers, routing, etc. without execution of embedded code. That helped in hunting down some of the dumber spammers and so forth. |

Thanks guys, I've got some homework to do. More input is welcome of course. Chris 99BBB |

I also like Firefox for a web browser. I have never used any version of Internet Explorer on any personal machine for any longer than it took to get over to the Firefox site and download it. The same used to be true for Netscape over whatever MS was using back in 1998 or so, and I am not a rabid anti-Microsoft person. I have just always preferred the other non-Microsoft browsers and email programs. You will probably need to set up a news server as well. This is a good free one that was recommended to me by someone here. (Chris Muto?) http://aioe.org/ There are lots of others out there that are free as well. If you need help setting it up, let me know and I can either do it remotely online, or I can talk you through it over the phone. It's not rocket science stuff, but if you haven't done email and newsgroup settings in a while, it can be helpful to have someone who is fresh on the subject. I also have a web-based (yahoo) account that I like because I can access that account from any internet connected computer that I use. This has come in handy when staying over at a "friend's" place, especially before the so-called smart phones. Pat |

You can still use Windows Mail, you'll need to get it from an old Vista computer or have someone put in on a CD for you. http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/0...-in-windows-7/ Personally, I don't think any combination program is good enough for both mail and news, I use Pegasus Mail for email (after giving up on T'Bird) and Xnews for newsgroups. Both are free. Google will find them for you, Pegasus has a GREAT support group and everything you ever need to know about Xnews is at: news.software.readers on Usenet. -- XS11E, Killing all posts from Google Groups The Usenet Improvement Project: http://twovoyagers.com/improve-usenet.org/ |
