Default Auto Shipper Beware

Hi all,
Considering that I've read a number of requests for info on car
forwarding/shipping companies, I thought I'd pass this info along I got from
a friend of mine (Chairman of the DKW Club of America). BTW, I've never
used them, so the usual disclaimers apply. Pass it on as you see fit.
Cheers!

I received a fair amount of feedback from yesterday's mail regarding
AAAdvantage Auto Transport, none of it favorable. But there's more. You
might have your car transported by these clowns even if you book transport
through someone else I guess it pays to ask a LOT of questions and to take
NOTHING for granted. Read on:

Good advise!!!. I had the same company take my Checker taxi to Chicago and
bring it back very damaged. The rear quarter panel was dented; the rear
bumper was also pulled away from the body. Now a Checker bumper is a force
to be reckoned with. Many letters were sent, including some sent to their
partners in Redwood City. NO response at all. Their insurance company
refused to respond and after a great deal of persistence, they denied the
claim stating that it was damaged before.

Never use A AAAdvantage Auto Transport, they are very bad.
I had My MGB shipped from NY to San Francisco and they took 6 months and
broke the front glass.

NEVERRRRRRRR

Sadly its not always disclosed that transport places outsource - this is
what happened to my friend:

"I booked through "National Auto Transport" (auto-transporter.com) which was
advertised on classiccartraderonline.com, a division of autotrader.com

After what seemed like good cordial contact and a decent rate, I was booked
to have my car picked up, turns out National Auto Transport brokers to other
companies, that happened to be AAAAdvantage... unfortunately they DID NOT
inform me of who would be transporting the car and National Auto also quoted
me that it would take 7-10 days door-to-door and that the company would only
use *1* truck to transport the car, load on at origin, load off at
destination, another factor why I chose to go with them.

Big mistake. About the only thing they kept to was picking up the car. After
that it turned out to be almost a month before I saw the car. Both companies
gave us the run around with lies about why the truck was delayed, where it
was currently at. It also turns out the original 7-10 day quote was a rouse
to get your business, they had no intention of keeping that timeline and
after repeated attempts to deal with National Auto over the phone and email,
they washed their hands of it and told me only AAAAdvantage can help me
since they have the car now.

AAAAdvantage was no better. Long holds with advertisements saying why they
are #1 in the business and that the majority of their transports are repeat
customers. Unless these customers are people who don't care where and how
their car is being treated, I can't understand why someone would use these
people. They never had any answer why the car was taking as long as it did
and it took 3 weeks for the car to even leave the East Coast! Unbelievable.
Not only that but they use multiple transporters, for their cars, not the
sole transporting truck I was sold on. Deciding that I'd rather pick up the
car at their local hub in Livermore instead of waiting even longer for it to
get loaded onto another transporter with the possibility of damage.

The business is a joke. Arriving to the hub, it turns out to be nothing more
than a strange lot adjacent to a business park where it wasn't even paved
where they stored the cars. The office is run out of an old run-down house
that you wouldn't want to go into if you were stranded. Of course they only
would the remaining balance in cash.

Avoid these two companies at all costs!!!!"

I'll vouch for Dan Grinnell, who's moved 2 Rileys, a
wine rack, and a load of parts including an axle and a
transmission for me, all cross-country, all arriving
in perfect shape. I have contact info if anyone wants
it.

Best, John Voelker

So, as Sgt. Esterhaus used to say on Hill Street Blues, "Let's be very
careful out there..."
