got the Porsche back...
....from the body shop yesterday. Already have been driving it
exclusively since I got the keys again. Man, I forgot how nice it was to drive a real car... sorry American car fans, my new Chevy is nothing on a 18 year old beater 944. Would take the 944 every time, unless there's snow on the ground. I love my car. (and I was actually considering selling it - well now that the quarter panel I didn't like was replaced thanks to an idiot hit and runner, I don't think that's happening, unless I get a good line on a 944 Turbo...) One thing I forgot though was how pathetic the dash illumination is on a 944. Already wishing for a Flamingeye dash light kit, if I could get my hands on one... it is not good to be driving around at night squinting and staring to try to read the gauges. Also need to find out why I have a nasty vibration right about 80 MPH... I swear one of the balance shaft belts is off, despite two shops having told me they're right... nate |

The idea of illuminated controls is that you don't have to take your hands off the wheel ( to pick up the falslight ) to read them at night btw. What do you do ? Drive around holding the flashlight in your mouth ? Turn yourself in to the police immediately you disgusting criminal dangerous driver. Graham |

Lecture about safety, and you drive a piece of **** car with bald tires, and no dash lights. That may help in your case, or then again, maybe the only > solution is more bulbs back there... here's a pretty good summary of what the problem is: http://www.flamingeye.co.uk/causeofdimillumination.htm I've done a "stopgap" by installing 194 bulbs in place of the originals (slightly higher wattage) and stripping the light guides completely and covering them with "fake chrome" tape. It works, after a fashion - I am one of those people who tends to keep my dash lights somewhat dim to preserve my night vision, I'm OK with it now but some people might say they're still too dim. The real problem is the inability to find a completely reflective yet self-adhesive material with which to cover the light guides. The "fake chrome" tape is still somewhat translucent; I can see light shining right through it when I look under the dash. If I can't get an LED kit, I may try aluminum foil and contact cement, or aluminum foil and some double sided cellophane tape... ghetto as it sounds, I'm out of any better ideas. I've been told not to go any higher with the wattage, as that would tend to melt the cluster. The bulbholders already are a little brown near the bulb, so that seems like good advice. nate |

I understand that the red doesn't affect night vision near as much as white light. |

There are some pretty powerful LEDs, although they are a few bucks each, but definitely cheaper than a speeding ticket or an accident. :-) Or you could try some aluminum flashing behind each bulb... > > nate Ulf |

I have some red LEDs that I tried, even with five small LEDs in place of each bulb, the overall brightness was less, and I didn't think it was quite bright enough to be considered easily visible. nate |
