pure gasoline/petrol

So is gasoline "hydrocarbons"?

Gasoline sold for "on highway use" is tainted with oxygenates, Ethenol,
additives, and detergents.

But what if it were possible to pump into the cars gas tank PURE
gasoline. Gasoline 87 octane of course and which is just pure gas with
0% sulfur.

How would the engine run? Would it run better than ever, or would it
sputter? Certainly there's got to be a difference.

Not sure on that, but the additives are in there to keep the fuel
injection systems in newer vehicles clean and properly functional. I
use the 89 (E-10) blend and get better mileage than with the standard
87. In my Jeep that's not saying too much...18 vs. 17

There is no such thing as *pure* gasoline.

All gasoline is a mix of various hydrocarbons.
Overall a typical gasoline is predominantly a mixture of paraffins (alkanes),
naphthenes (cycloalkanes), aromatics and olefins (alkenes)
Pure octane would work though.

The term "pure" gasoline is a bit of a contradiction in terms.
Gasoline without the additive packages is a already mixture of petroleum
distillates and does contain sulfur and other non-hydrocarbon
contaminants.

I expect if you ran your car on a reference mixture of pure iso-octane
(87%) and heptane, it would run pretty much the same in the short
term, but tend to gunk up more with combustion byproducts in the long
term due to the lack of detergents. But that's just a guess.
