Default steering wheel noise

I have a 740i and when I turn the wheel even slightly it now sounds like an
old creeky floor. I seem to have no issues with the power steering but
thought I should try and add some. ANY THOUGHTS?

Ahh.. I have the same problem in my 530d... Am going to ask at the garage
next week when I am there anyway to have the oil changed. I do suspect
"something" in the power steering, although it works fine...

But very annoying indeed... Did not buy a BMW to get creeky sounds :-)

I'll guess sway bar links. Jack the front off the ground and turn the
wheels by hand left to right, this way you can stick your hand in there and
feel the creak. Check both ends of the sway bar link on each side. If you
think you have it disconnect the lower joint of the offending link and the
sound should dissappear.

I appreciate your input
Forgive my inexperience but if I disconnect the lower joint wont that
compromise it?

Regarding the slip rings are they accessible in the area between the
steering wheel and the dash? I reached over and found a screw loose.

Not at all, you just release a single nut and pull the joint out of the hole
in the end of the sway bar. Re-insert it and fasten the net to re-attach.
You might need another wrench on the other side of the sway bar to steady
the swivel joint as you release the nut. But it's very easy and harmless to
do. Have a look.

No, you have to remove the wheel to access it. I've never done it on an
airbag wheel though, nor do I know anything about it, so get some better
advice. :-) But it's right under the big nut that holds the wheel on. The
noise from here would be a high pitched squeaky noise of metal dragging on
metal -- just little objects though. Most often it's squeak or a
fingernails on the chalkboard type sound. The front sway link noise is more
like a creaky hardwood floor that you mentioned in your original post.

-Russ.
