Idiots say traffic moves more smoothly when all vehicles are at the
same speed but then it's really tough when someone wants to switch
lanes. How can openings develop when we're all moving as a unit?

One more proof that you are an idiot.

that's why slower traffic (and you qualify in both senses of the word)
should keep to the right when not passing.

The board notes you avoided the issue and made a personal attack.

You.... ****ing.... Spastic... "american" (sic)...

If everyone is travelling the same speed, then very few people will
need to change lanes - thereby improving traffic flow and reducing
traffic accidents. Wyy do you want more accidents - did you just buy
some stock in GM?

Stating a true fact is not a personal attack...moron.

I was going to originally reply directly to the OP, as it seemed a
potentially legit although rather silly question from a traffic
newbie, until I saw who posted it - and then saw that SADDAM double
posted in this thread (once under Car Crashes, and once under the new
improved SADDAP!).
So really there was no reason to reply after all except as a warning
to point out the new nyms, and to ask if SADDAM is familiar w/ the
concept of turn signals and common courtesy (after all, if everyone is
driving smoothly, sounds like a hypothetical batch of good, observant
drivers).

The only possibility to create gaps is for other drivers in the
formation to initiate a change in speed. When there is no dedicated
formation, which means that no driver is intending to fall-out or join
that controlled-density formation, the result is a safety hazard and a
severe decrease in roadway throughput.

I have been trapped in several traffic-jams this month. Most of these
traffic-jams were caused by one or two passing-lane blockers. The flow
of traffic became disrupted, resulting in an approximate 50 km/h
decrease in average speed within 100 m behind the disruption. Drivers
were swerving around the obstructions, and the traffic density was
significantly-lower ahead of the PLBs.

In one of the incidents involving an LLB and a CLB directly in front of
me, I almost collided with a driver who became impatient and tried to
undertake by swerving around me without signalling. Then the next
driver behind me started tailgating me, and the driver on my left
appeared to be attempting an undertake as well. I attempted
successfully to dislodge the lane-blockers, and the flow of traffic was
restored.

During one incident involving an SUV-driving LLB going very slowly, the
amusement began when the autobahn police were alerted, who required a
few minutes to cut through the jam to the source of it. The LLB braked
hard when it saw the patrol car with blue light activated. Wrong
response! The LLB was eventually moved to the shoulder, where it was
hopefully given a severe penalty for the safety hazard that it was
causing. Several seconds later, the traffic returned to a normal speed
and the passing lane emptied. Only one PLB is required to cause a
safety hazard and stopped traffic. Keep Right Except To Pass!
