Mine's still going at 60,000 miles and 8 years. I think part of the problem is that the clutch fluid isn't on the official service schedule. if you let your brake fluid go that black you'd expect internal corrosion of the brake cylinders and pipes! |

Agreed. I replace both brake and clutch fluid annually. My original clutch slave lasted 125k miles / 11 years before it finally died. The clutch itself is still going strong at 135k. -- Lanny Chambers '94C, St. Louis http://www.hummingbirds.net/alignment.html |

throw out bearing
Well, with only 57K on the car I'm a bit dissapointed that the throw out
bearing seems to be shot. Clutch and slave cylinder are fine. I'm third owner though, so perhaps a PO used the clutch pedal as a foot rest, only thing I can think of to explain this problem. When I do this repair, I will change my clutch fluid though as others here suggested, it's a bit brownish. throw out bearing
"Is the clutch throw out bearing a known weak point on Miata's?"
Not that I know of. The reason for replacement is more often due to replacement of other parts and possibly noise and visible wear, rather than loss of function. If I'm replacing the clutch, pressure plate, pilot bearing, etc. I clean and check the throw out bearing for visible wear, smoothness, and play. If it is typical, I'll replace any lost lubricant with high temperature grease, and re use it. The solvents used for cleaning should clean it externally, and not leach out the internal lubricant. A thin film of high temp grease should be placed on throwout bearing surfaces subject to wear, the clutch "Y" actuator (four places), and the ball that the "Y" actuator rides on.
