BMW-525I - oil change frequency
Folks,
I got 15k miles oil change upto 30K from the dealer and then got an independant garage which specializes only in BMW to change the oil at 42K. They used the same synthetic oil that the dealership uses but the oil filter they used was different (#11-42-1-427-908). The garage also recommend I get the oil change done every 6-7K. I now have 49K on the car Q1: Is this oil filter good for this car? Q2: When should I get the next oil changeand from where? Ag,
You are going to get many opinions on this. I have been using Mobile 1 synthetic for a for about 10 years now, changing my own oil way more than necessary, and I'm not pushing frequent oil changes, Mobile 1, or Synthetic oil, but I can tell you that the last 3 cars I've had, changing oil 5-6K miles with synthetic oil have been engine trouble free. I get the oil from Costco, $4/qt, and although it's more expensive than regular oil, it seems to work well and it's cheap enough I don't worry about. I've been told some oil filters have some type of 'cold' valve that lets oil bypass the filter initially when the car is cold .. to get oil to the engine faster - have never personally seen this, but some people think this is do. I personally use any oil filter that fits the car and change it every time I change the oil. good luck. You could get it changed at any competent place or even do it yourself using the proper materials. Huw |

I would not wait more than 1 years to change the oil at the maximum (in the event you do not accumulate the miles to cause the service indicator lights to change). I'm prettty sure that is what is the BMW recomendation too. At 2 years you do the brake flush and coolant flush too... -Fred W |

One would have thought that after 10 years you would have been able to
spell Mobil by now. Most cars have an oil pressure bypass valve such that if the oil pressure is too high because the car is cold or the filter is blocked oil still circulates through the engine. |

What is so magic about a year?
I'd follow the manufacturer's recommendation. The manufacturer has to uphold the warranty and if the recommended intervals are too long and the reliability degrades, this will cost BMW dearly. So if they are satisfied; I am satisfied. Some people like to waste their time changing oil (and degrade the environment in the process) by changing oil every 3000 miles. I'm not one of them. I'd love to have definitive proof that early oil changes extend engine life. Plenty will say that they change every 3000 or whatever and their engine does 300,000 miles, but then that doesn't tell what it would do with maker's oil changes. My brother's E28 520 is approaching 250,000 with the oil changed as per the lights. The engine's fine, but the rest falling apart. ;-) Mainly rust or corrosion related. -- *He who dies with the most toys is, nonetheless, dead. Nothing magic... just that I thought I that recalled that being the time period recommended by BMW in the owner's manuals. But I checked and found out that I was wrong, and you were correct. It is actually 2 years. That is good to know. So if you do not reach the mileage for any other service by 2 years you can have the oil, coolant and brake fluids all changed together. -Fred W |

Think it changed with the change from semi to fully synthetic oil. -- *'Progress' and 'Change' are not synonyms. Dave Plowman London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound. |
