Another geezer plows into crowd - Another " stuck accelerator pedal"?? -
This sort of thing wil continue until we throw these impaired old goats in prison when they lose control of their car. Stop coddling these killers. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060729/...rbucks_crash_2 Man drives onto Starbucks patio; 10 hurt Sat Jul 29, 3:10 AM ET EL MONTE, Calif. - An elderly man drove a car onto a patio at a Starbucks on Friday night, injuring 10 people, two of them critically, authorities said. The driver, who was believed to be 80 or 81, was trying to park in a handicapped spot just after 9 p.m. when the car surged forward and hit the customers sitting on the patio, said police Lt. William Fetner. The car plowed through the patio and back into the parking lot, coming to rest on top of another car, Fetner said. A man and a woman were critically injured, said Capt. Mark Savage of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The other eight victims had moderate injuries, he said. Police struggled to get details from the driver, who spoke only Japanese. He was not injured. The identities of the driver and the victims were not released. El Monte is 14 miles east of downtown Los Angeles |

I agree with your setiments about the loss of mental capacity to drive, but I think we are also looking at manufacturer cover up of a design defect as well. Luckily every time it stuck was late at night on a freeway, and it stuck just after going into passing mode, I had to literallly reach down and pry it up at 70 MPH, which it did eaily pry. Eric |

Gas pedals don't stick. Only time you hear of that is after a crash when the killer is fishing for some excuse. |

I've had fuel pedals stick in position, drop to the floor full throttle(two
broken return springs, believe it or not), and have had linkages come apart and jam the throttle in position. It happens. In the one case i hit the brake in panic, the car slowed and stopped with no real problem despite the racing engine. In many 'runaway' cases, i understand folks (of all ages)accidentally step on the fuel when trying to hit the brake. Many cars, due to their design and size, have the two closer together than the old boats we once drove. I wonder if that's the case here... Bad driving is bad driving. It isn't caused by or related to race, religion, or nationality, despite your deepest desire for it to be so. The many close calls i have had on highways have mostly been due to the reckless or negligent behavior of clean cut wholesome baseball-loving flag-waving burger-chomping caucasian males in their twenties/thirties. If you really wish to kick people off our roads in the name of safety, consider the cocksure 'experienced' drivers who take chances for entertainment, believing that they 'know what they're doing' because they have 'x' miles/years accident free. Sound like you?
