I'm in the auto industry. Believe me, if we were a conspiracy, we
would have invented something to make you drive off a cliff a looong
time ago.

This is why the horse and carriage newsgroup doesn't exist any more. BTW - I
have been driving for 20 years now, and not a single accident. And I always
buy the latest tech stuff in my car.

Can you even buy a car without ABS, traction control and all the other
stuff? Not if you are buying a BMW or some other 'drivers' car.

Dusk sensors fool you into thinking that you should not worry about
your lights.

I suspect that you're a fan of DRLs too.

Automatic windshield wipers are yet another dumb gadget. The amount
of convenience they provide is nil. And I bet they sometimes come on when you dont
need them and fail to come on when you need them.

NAV systems are cool, but how often do you really need it? Most of the time
you drive in familiar teritory.

A car with all that crap is not a driver's car, it's a passenger's car.
which is why more and more people like me look at the vehicle parked
in front of the house (in my case, and '88 944) and think "there's
really nothing on the market that I'd like better..."

Fine, I agree. However, show me a 2005 car that is a 'drivers car'?

My point, is that you won't find one unless you custom build one.

BTW - to add insult to injury, I have laser cruise control too!!! ohh damn!
and a rear view camera!!

Agreed! The automotive market SUCKS right now! Other than a few
vehicles, most of which you can't buy in the US, there is absolutely
zilch of interest. Sure, there's some decent sedans and such, but if
you are looking for a car purely in terms of driving enjoyment, or
worse yet, a dual purpose road/race car, you are SOL.

That's how you sell a car to non-technically minded people.
I'm reminded of an episode of "That 70s Show", series 2,
where Red is working in a store, trying to sell some blenders.
He goes all day explaining how many RPM each blender goes
and how sharp its blades are etc. and makes no sales. Then
he gets some advice from the manager, and makes his next
sale by simply saying to the woman "They all blend your
food just as well -- now you only have to decide: do you
want black, or white?", or something similar.

When chumps go to a car yard and are choosing between
many different makes of car in the same class, the thing
that makes them prefer one or the other is usually something
"small" like the colour, or if it has fold-down rear seats, or
a roof rack, or a drinks holder, or automatic wipers in this case.

Great example of this: a couple of tourists take their little rental
FWD car up a steep mountain offroad 4WD dirt track, because
the GPS told them to.
This despite the road having large, prominent "ROAD CLOSED"
signs, river fords, and locked gates.

Wow, a pair of morons who are apparently are stupid enough they
shouldn't be driving in the first place.
