My gosh, if only all the world was this precise !! BTW If it's an "air flow meter", why do we refer to MAF, not AFM ? Dave S... |

I'm really confused now : if M is for 'mass', what are A & F for ? > 'Air' and 'Flow' respectively. Differentiates from an AFM, which usually only measures volume. The MAF uses a heated wire. As air is drawn across it, the wire is cooled in direct proportion to the *mass* (and therefore sort of related to the mass of Oxygen) of air passing over it. It matters not the density of the air, so you don't have a problem compensating between summer and winter. The ECU always knows how much air, and therefore oxygen has been drawn in, and can therefore inject the correct amount of fuel. AFM measures flow speed, often by a means of a spring loaded flap, and hence volume. In hot weather, the density of air decreases, so any given cubic meter of air will contain less oxygen. Thus unless some kind of compensation is applied, the engine will be running slightly rich. Or at least that's how it's been explained to me. -- Catman MIB#14 SKoGA#6 TEAR#4 BOTAFOF#38 Apostle#21 COSOC#3 Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright (Remove rust to reply) 116 Giulietta 3.0l Sprint 1.7 GTV TS GT 3.2 V6 Triumph Sprint ST 1050: It's blue, see. www.cuore-sportivo.co.uk |
