Buying a car in another state
I live in Alaska but am going to Ohio in June. I will probably be buying a
car while there and driving it back. Couple of questions: 1) Do I have to register the car in Ohio, then reregister in Alaska? 2) Do I get Ohio temp tags? 3) Do I have to pay Ohio sales tax (there is no sales tax in Alaska)? |

If your residence is in Alaska you shouldn't have to pay Ohio sales tax or registration fee. Again, ask. Also check with your insurance company and make sure they will cover it from the time you buy it. I live in Tennessee and bought a car in North Carolina last year (older Saabs are hard to find in TN). The dealer said I didn't have to pay the NC sales tax but I did have to pay TN sales tax when I registered it. You usually have 30 days after the sale is completed to get tags. It often takes that long just to get the paperwork from the dealer. Make sure you have the title in hand, with transfer signed and dated by the previous owner. |
