Does £550 sounds excessive for discs + pads all round (genuine alfa part) on
a 2002 156 JTS 2.0? Is there a cheaper alternative make which will still
stop the car as efficiently and which I might convince my alfa garage
(Edinburgh Georgie Rd, Arnold Clark) to fit?

Not excessive for an Alfa garage .... but then their prices are
excessive to start with. You will do better to by OEM parts from
someone like ebspares.co.uk, shop4parts.co.uk, buypartsby.co.uk,
brakes.co.uk, speedline.co.uk, etc. Their suppliers probably supply
Alfa/Fiat! Try a search on google and you'll be surprised at the
savings you can make.

Whether you will get an Alfa dealer to fit though is another matter,
but you will probably find there is an Alfa specialist in your area
that will do the job and for much less.

I changed all my discs and pads myself and the only special tools are a
7mm allen key for the fronts and a piston retractor for the rears where
the pistons have to be wound back in (£13 from Halfords!). I paid
around £100 for the parts from buypartsby and they work fine.

My parents used to take their 145 to South Park garages in Peebles. They're
an independent FIAT garage but will look at Alfa's. They used to be very
reasonable prices wise (Got my Bravo's cambelt done for about £120 a few
years back) and they're pretty friendly and helpful too.

I bet they could beat AC's price hands down. You could also have a nice day
out in Peebles too (lmao)

Is that the garage round the back of the new (4 years old) Safeway's - used
to be a Citroen dealer?

I had forgotten how much there is to do in Peebles - there is a swimming
pool, a garden for the blind (scented) and if that's not enough, I could go
to Greggs for a baguette and feed the ducks in the park. Unfortunately, I'm
not over 60 yet, so I'm not allowed into Peebles!

LOL - I was forced to spend my teenage years there so count yourself
lucky!!!! (why don't we move from the centre of Newcastle to the centre of
nowhere? Jeez - still bitter after 23 years)

It's on Southparks Industrial estate. Go thru the high street and left over
the main Tweed Bridge and turn right along Caledonian road. Keep going
straight on until the road runs out. Theres lots of new build houses
(Edderston Ridge?) on the left and the industrial estate is on the right.
Think south of river and west of town and you can't go far wrong.
