Default OT : Where in america to live ?

Excuse thise extreme OT post ! Just wondering all your opinions on the best
place in the USA to live.

For a long time I have been thinking that america looks BIG and cool.

I have thought for a long time that it would be nice and easier to find a
nice place to live there than in the UK.

The UK is small and even in a nice place your are close to a 'NOT NICE'
place !!! We are lucky we dont get poisonous creatures living here ( we
have the adder (snake) but I don't know of anyone thats seen one ! )

I woudnt want to live near quake zones or tornado alley - or recently near
hurricane zones, For a long time I have thought New England would be nice.
Main or near it.

I like sun - dont mind snow - dont like wind !

It would be nice to here what all you think about where you live and where
you would like to live .

Thanks for your 'OT' time !

Rich

Welcome!

Biggest prob is: "How much money have you?"
That would influence a decision more than anything
as housing/living costs in US vary WIDELY.

Come to Cleveland (Ohio). We have TONS of snow
*AND* COLD and a little bit of sun.
But living costs here are among lowest in US.

I grew up in New England in southern New Hampshire. It is expensive living
in most parts of that section of country but I'm sure there are still
reasonable places as far as cost-wise goes around. It depends on how far
into the "sticks" you want to live. Also in New England a crucial
requirement is you must like snow ;^). I understand you not wanting a
hurricane prone area..... I live in the Panhandle of Florida and we haven't
been having a great run of luck lately!! Any place you live here I'm sure
you'll like it though.

See - there you go again Speedy !!! Jan says scary - I say cool, I think Jan
is closer !!

The house I am in cost me 176 K UK Pounds, about 250K us$ ?

So that would be my budget . I like remoteness, and simple living. - land
is more important that the house.

As Far as in the sticks goes - I can 'get on' with anyone, and I like my own
company, so remote would be fine !

First choice would be Cloud Croft, NM. Cool summers, mountains and
some snow.

My other choice would be Texas Hill country. Nice views, light dusting
of snow sometimes, summer gets a little hot and dry though.

Well the more remote you are from suburban centers in the north east the
better. Everytime I go to visit family on leave I always ask myself "Have
the people here always been this rude?". The answer is yes, I just grew up
in it and didn't notice the difference until I lived in the south where
people are much freindlier generally. I still miss downhill skiing though!!
