A little late. There was a schematic in a 1978 or 1979 issue of Popular
Electronics for an automotive ice detector...

road. Shows it on the driver information display.

So do the current Nissans and many other cars. Different thing. They just
put "Ice" on the display when the outside temp sensor drops to a
predetermined temperature.

This thing referred to here is a radio link to an external road monitoring
system that reports actual ice.

I wonder how that will work. Considering that they would have to install
a LOT of those monitors on millions of miles of roads...
Sounds like another gimmick, like having a vehicle that backs itself
into a spot.

Agreed. I'm guessing its only for that one spot in Japan and the
international circulation of the ad is just a hype thing.

That would be another bull**** system..

The traditional ones sense the temperature of the road surface via IR,
I believe. I think it is good enough for a problem that is fleeting and
seasonal.

We have far too much electronic google-de-**** already.
