Hi I am looking for a toy sports car. Looking at maybe a kit car or
body kit on an MR2 or 300zx. Like to have a car which is not like a
lot of others out there. Not necessarily looking for a replica. I have
two questions.
One: I am 42 years old, will I look funny in an mr2 or 300zx since
most
of these cars are owned by young adults? If so what are you 40-50 year
old driving remember budget is an issue. Here are the cars I am
looking at:
Porsche 911 (too expensive)
Porsche 944 (lots of maintenance)
Mitsubishi 3000GT (not sure)
MR2 (think I am getting to old for this one)
300zx ( see above)
Toyota supra (too expensive)
BMW (see a lot of them around)
Audi ( see above)
This gives you an idea. looking to spend approx 10-15k before adding
my personal touch.
Never a fan of American cars so don't suggest any.

second what are your thoughts on cars that look like others, eg. an
mr2 modified to look like a Ferrari? Is it weird?
Maybe we can start a poll on age and what weekend car are you driving.
TIA

I'd stop worrying about what you'll look like in the car and start test
driving some and find what you like. I have a 944 and find it to be an
excellent car and you can pick them up for less than $10K in
near-showroom condition. Yes maintenance is a little more expensive but
they last virtually forever.

If you're more interested in having fun than looking like you're having
fun, pretty much any 944, 200SX, MR2, Miata, etc. (e.g. basic, cheap RWD
sporty car) and a helmet and a weekend at a good driving school or
driver's ed track day will pay off far more than buying an expensive
sports car and never taking it to the track.

I'm not a big fan of body kits; typically IME they make a car try to
look like something it isn't and just scream "POSER!!!" Like I said
just find you a cheap RWD sporty car that's still in decent condition
and spend the leftover $$$ on a DE event.

My favorite was a Fiat 850 Spyder. I was well into my thirties, 200+
lbs and bald. Now, I'm within kicking distance of seventy, 20 lbs
lighter and would grab another 850 Sypder in a second if someone drove
one up and the price / condition was right. You will have a long time
to regret the things you didn't do as well at the things you did.
They both hurt. Wih the bad ones, you can say, "It seemed like the
right thing to do at the time."
You can never say this about the chances you missed.

There's another good one, I forgot about FIATs because they all rusted
away most places I've lived. Another option would be an Alfa
Giulietta/Graduate. I liked another poster's recommendation of a
Lotus, but that might not fit the OP's price criteria.

To get really vintage, I've always liked Triumph TR-6s but I don't
know if I could make the committment necessary to own a British car.

That got me checking google maps for a place where a TR-6 was sitting
rotting away for about 20 years. I remember first seeing it parked there
in the 80s and it slowly rotted away as weeds and plant life
surrounded it. I haven't gone that route much in recent years, but
I vaguely recall noticing it was gone. I can't see it on street view or
sat. There's a tree covering most of the exact spot on sat and there's a
blurr about where it should be on street view. I don't know if it's gone
or the plants have simply 'won'.

If you buy a mufler shop, consider one of the classic Austin Healeys.
