old oil filter question
Hi all,
got a question about oil filter cartridges. I have a '62 Stude which uses a replaceable-cartridge type oil filter. The cartridge is a Fram C4 which is apparently a fairly common bypass-type cartridge. Here's the thing, the housing was apparently made by Walker not Fram and the gasket for the lid that comes with the cartridge doesn't fit. ISTR buying a filter for my '56 a couple years ago and the cartridge came with two gaskets. I think it may have been Hastings but I'm not sure. Whatever parts store I go to I have to order these so they can't pull one off the shelf and look. Can anyone help, if you have a car that uses this filter and it comes with two gaskets can you tell me what brand filter you're using? The gasket that was on the filter leaked, and so did my half fast attempt at a quickie gasket with silicone. I don't have time to let another bead of silicone set up, I'd like to drive the car to a show Saturday and I won't be able to get to where it is until Saturday morning. thanks, nate -- replace "fly" with "com" to reply. http://home.comcast.net/~njnagel |

Esay fix. Purchase a sheet of cork gasket material at any parts store.
Use the filter as a template and trace the shape. Cut with scissors and install. On Mon, 27 Sep 2004 18:40:49 -0400, Nate Nagel > wrote: >Hi all, > >got a question about oil filter cartridges. Easier fix.....
Have your local NAPA store look in the back of the paper catalog for the listing on filter gaskets. When I managed a NAPA stoer, we used to sell a particular hydraulic filter to one of our customers that required a gasket that was different from the one included in the box. We looked it up by size in the back of the catalog, put it in stock, and supplied a new, correct gasket with each filter we sold this customer. Chances are good you will be able to buy one or a dozen of these gaskets separately. Bob Paulin Riteous Right Reverend Mahmoud Bin Changstein > wrote in article >... > Esay fix.
