Gas prices, gas taxes and FL vs GA
Took a trip to J-ville this afternoon. Aside from the usual idiots on
the road - such as the woman at the T-intersection making a Florida Left Turn (get out into the intersection and wait for the light to turn red to stop oncomming traffic and then make your turn) who decides to freeze in the intersection like a deer in the headlights, I had a relatively interesting observation on gas prices and the notion that gas is "cheaper," in GA because of its "low," gas taxes: I gassed up here in Brunswick before leaving and the price was in the $2.83 to 2.87 range at most stations around here. In the area of J-ville where I went to (the Phillips Highway area; note: Phillips Highway = US 1) I noted the gas prices in J-ville to be in the $2.83 or so range also. And this is with FL's nortoriously high taxes. Can't help but think that there is a little gouging going on here in GA, especially as I see many of the gas stations here being given rather expensive facelifts and/or receiving new LED price signs to replace the manual signs they have used for years. -- necromancer Criminal Coddler. My experience, living near the VA/WV border leads me to believe that border stations in lower gas tax states raise their prices relative to gas stations further from the border, while gas stations in the higher gas tax state lower their prices relative to gas stations further from the border. I can't say if the same situation exists near the GA/FL border though. |

I noted the gas prices at Exits 3 and 1 on I-95 just before entering FL and the prices were about $0.07 - $0.10 less than in Brunswick (FWIW, I gassed up at Exit 38 on I-95). Go across the line to Exit 380 in Yulee, FL and the two gas stations there tend to have significantly higher prices - even by FL's standards. -- "Mc Gruff the Crime Dog has been missing for about two weeks, now.
