It's a fine looking car, Pat. Do you still like it as much as when you
first got it? Do you drive it just for the sheer fun of how well it does everything? max "Paddy's Pig" > wrote in message ... > Daily driver ---- except for the days when I drive my 2002 CLK 430 AMG > instead. > -- > Pat Durkin > > |

Hah! I think you're a batchelor. I'm not. My significant other claims it more often than I. But when I *do* get to drive it I enjoy it. It doesn't have the brutal speed of my CLK430 but it's relatively quick anyway. I was amazed to learn that the standard C300 Luxury will turn a 95 MPH 1/4 mile although it takes more than a second longer to get there than my CLK430 or your much larger car. It doesn't sound like much but is noticeably slower. What I particularly enjoy though is that the car is eerily quiet and smooth. A lot more 'civilized' than the CLK. It is a pleasure to drive even though not nearly as explosive. -- Pat Durkin |

... I shot this with an old 28mm wide-angle prime lens from one of my old Nikon F2's. It's not a wide angle on the digital D70 though. I think it would be equivalent to around 42mm so that's kind of like a "normal" lens on a 35mm film camera. In fact compared to the 18mm minimum focal length of my "kit lens" if feels almost like a mild telephoto because I'm forced to back up quite a bit to get a car in frame. Of course it has to be manually focused & doesn't couple with the newer camera's exposure system but older prime lenses are often superior optically to modern zoom lenses. That'd be hard to prove on the strength of only a handful of shots but I may play around with it a bit. This lens fits the D70 body but the newer D80's mounting flange is machined differently and it won't twist and lock. -- Pat Durkin |

The frame size of a D70 is 1.6X that of a 35mm film camera so your 28mm lens is about 45mm, a little under "normal." In fact compared to > the 18mm minimum focal length of my "kit lens" if feels almost > like a mild telephoto because I'm forced to back up quite a bit to > get a car in frame. Duh! Ahhh, you're so lucky:
As much as I want to buy a C-Class, the nearest dealer is about65-70 miles away.... not terribly convenient. The price of a C-300 here in Canada is 21% higher than the U.S. List price. 21%!! But to buy a U.S. dollar only costs us TWO percent. Mercedez Benz and the middlemen are grabbing the extra 19%. Then on top of that outrage, our Federal Government adds another 5% to that already excessive price. (and they've reduced that tax from 7% 2 years ago) Oh, yes, and you don't have to drive yours in snow, slush, freezing rain, SALT!.......... a little hard on a "daily driver." (The attached picture was taken on March 8, 2008. The guy with the snowblower is a retired 6-foot+ Toronto cop. And my banks are at least 2 feet higher, because I shovel the snow. Oh, yes, and we've had at least 12" more since those pix. Sob!) (Of course, I would consider it a personal favor if you don't post any more pictures of that lovely automobile!! At least until late June.) "Paddy's Pig" > wrote in message ... > Daily driver ---- except for the days when I drive my 2002 CLK 430 AMG > instead. > -- > Pat Durkin > > > |

I've got to admit when I see snow pics like that it doesn't register on me how much work it imposes on the residents. I've never had to shovel snow in my life. I'm dimly aware that people have to move it around, but to me it just looks nice. -- Pat Durkin |
