A lot of them did get killed off. The Indian Wars were nothing more than
massacres, of "Indians" living in fortified encampments to protect
themselves.
The saying "Nits become Lice" was an expression among the Europeans who
slaughtered "Indian" children for sport and scalps as well as their
Mothers.
It was not until 1924 that"Indians" had any rights. The same year, I
believe, Alabama passed a Law making it illegal to kill and "Indian."
The Eastern Tribes had/have many features not common to the western bands.
I'm not a genealogist or whatever. Some of Dad's and Mother's Ancestors
were tall, lean, and lighter skinned.
The description, of GGGGrandfather at discharge, from the Militia
describes the tall Woodland, lean, muscular etc "Indian."
There are photos, of GGGrandfather on Mother's side. He was also tall
lean etc. The features do not match the Alaskan Natives and the western
bands.
The description of the "Indians" that the first Europeans encountered do
not match the Alaskan Native, Navaho etc either.
I suspect that some, the Iroquoians , of our Ancestors, were part
Northern European from many centuries before Eric even.
Had the DNA done some years ago. Have to get some of the women to have
their done to further pin it down.
DNA and MTDNA is confusing to me.
