Default Reaching San Francisco from Los Angeles, no freeway?

Hi Viatologists,

Surprisingly, it's possible to each the two Californian super-cities w/o
a single freeway. By commanding several state routes, and some city
streets, you can get the journey done in a full day by car.

Here's how it can be done. (For our international readers, the terms
SB, NB, WB and EB refer to southbound, northbound, westbound and
eastbound, respectively!):

(1) SB Broadway. (Los Angeles)
(2) WB 5th Street.
(3) SB Flower Street.
(4) WB Wilshire Boulevard.
(5) NB Highland Avenue, State Route 170. (
http://worldwide-hwys.calrog.com/ca-170-i.html )
(6) WB Santa Monica Boulevard, State Route 2.
(7) NB La Brea Avenue.
(8) WB Sunset Avenue.
(9) NB Laurel Canyon Boulevard.
(10) WB Ventura Boulevard, former US Federal Route 101.
(11) NB Topanga Canyon Boulevard, State Route 27.
(12) WB Santa Susana Pass Rd./Los Angeles Avenue. (Simi Valley)
(13) WB Tierra Rejada Avenue/NB Spring Road/WB Los Angeles Avenue/NB
Walnut Canyon Road, State Route 23. (Moorpark,
http://worldwide-hwys.calrog.com/ca-27.html ).
(14) WB State Route 126 (Ventura County,
http://worldwide-hwys.calrog.com/ca-126.html ).
(15) WB East Telegraph Road/East Main Street/NB North 10th Street.
(Santa Paula, http://worldwide-hwys.calrog.com/ca-150.html ).
(16) NB State Route 33. (Ojai,
http://worldwide-hwys.calrog.com/ca-33.html ).
(17) WB State Route 198. (Coalinga,
http://worldwide-hwys.calrog.com/ca-198.html ).
(18) NB State Route 25. (Monterey County)
(19) EB State Route 156. (near Hollister,
http://worldwide-hwys.calrog.com/ca-156d.html ).
(20) WB Pacheco Pass Road, State Route 152 and Gilroy city-street.
(Santa Clara County, http://worldwide-hwys.calrog.com/ca-152.html ).
(21) NB Monterey Highway, former US Federal Route 101 and present State
Route 82. (Gilroy and San José,
http://worldwide-hwys.calrog.com/ca-82.html).
(22) NB El Camino Real, State Route 82. (San Francisco Peninsula)
(23) NB Mission Street. (San Francisco proper).
(24) EB Cesar Chavez Street (former Army Street).
(25) NB South Van Ness Avenue into Van Ness Avenue, US Federal Route
101 ( http://worldwide-hwys.calrog.com/us-101_3c.html ).

Seriously, allow yourself more than 24 hours if traveling by moped or
bicycle. ;-)

All photographs of corresponding highways are brought to you by the
Worldwide Highway Library, a Calrog.com component. No other website
gives you more coverage of North America, Europe and Asia. Stay tuned
for future video coverage of Orange County tollways and the
soon-to-be-opened CA-125 tollway. It's all coming next week!

So you're saying, basically, that it's possible to drive from LA to SF.
Whoop-te-do.

What a ****ing idiot.

Interesting.

Being one who strongly dislikes freeways, I recently took US 101 from
downtown Los Angeles to San Francisco using all of the extant pre-
freeway alignments. In some cases, the original 2-lane has been
twinned to form an expressway or freeway segment, so I couldn't avoid
freeways entirely, but it was a very enjoyable trip.

I must say the biggest problem was getting from San Jose to San
Francisco during the evening rush hour. I think it took over 2 hours
of stop and go traffic all the way up the Peninsula.

Alternatively, getting out of downtown LA via Sunset, Cahuenga, and
Ventura Boulevards wasn't difficult at all during evening rush hour
the previous day (I had to stop for business en route so made the trip
over two days).

I highly recommend this trip -- several of the pre-freeway US 101
alignments along the Central Coast are delightful to drive and allow
you to see a part of California that hasn't changed much at all over
the past century.

You failed to mention helicopter, plane and train. But then those wouldn't
allow to pat yourself on the back because you think you're so clever.

It's not astonishing, but avoiding freeways in California can be
difficult.

I'm sure that if I put my mind to it, I could find a freeway free
route from Miami, FL to Anchorage, AK if I was inclined to do so (or
from Santiago, Chile to Fairbanks, AK for that matter). What's the
OP's point?

Or boat, or hiking or bicycle.

So what?

I know at least 3 ways to Chicago from Arkansas without using Interstates.
:-p
