Default Vanagon Engine question

Will a stock 2.1 waterboxer be a direct replacement for a 1.9 in a 1985
Vanagon? Or will it or the Vanagon need modifications?

Should be a drop-in replacement as to physical fit. I am not sure with
reference to the engine management systems (computer, sensors and so
forth).
