Default Car Dies No Power

My son has a 81 Dodge Challenger with a 4 cyc. Mitsubishi engine. He
lives about 4 hrs. away from me and I can't think of what it could be.
He had the ignition switch replaced but it still happens. He can start
the car and drive it for a while and then it shuts down and nothing
works. No power,no lights nothing works. He lets it sit for a while and
it will start and turn the radio on and it shuts down again.anyone have
an idea what causes this? Any help is appreciated. Charlie

Sounds like it is either the positive or negative battery wires, or
something like that which affects the whole electrical system. If the
positive battery wires were to be shorted to ground, such as being pinched
or coming in contact with the exhaust system, that would shut down the whole
electrical system. If the starter has been replaced recently, check the
battery wire at the solenoid. If you cannot find anything like that, try
this when the car dies:

Turn on the headlights
Connect a jumper wire from the negative battery terminal to the car body. If
the lights come on then the fault is in the ground circuit. (If the jumper
wire gets really hot and starts to smoke, then the positive battery wire is
shorted to ground).
If that doesn't work, turn off the headlights and connect the jumper wire
from the positive terminal to one of the headlight power leads. If the lamp
lights then the fault is in the power side.

Thanks Larry,Im going to forward this to my son .Maybe he can find the
problem. I though it might be a ground wire myself but it's hard to
think of thing's when you are not there. The testing when it happens is
a great idea. Thanks again I will post when he finds the problem.Charlie
