Help. TMC function for Sat Nav in the UK

I have a 3 series (2001) with Satellite Navigation which takes CDs and not
the new DVDs. Does anyone know if I can utilise the TMC function in the UK?

With the 2001-2 GB CD the function does not work. However with the 2002-2
Benelux CD the TMC function works fine in Europe.

BMW UK have told me that apparently the TMC function in the UK only works
using the new DVDs and not with the CDs. Yet all the European countries work
fine with the CDs.

Can anyone shed some light on why this is the case? This means that anyone
in the UK with a sat nav system pre 2004 or which reads CDs rather than DVDs
cannot use the TMC function in the UK.

I have a new 320D (Aug 04) with the DVD Sat Nav and the TMC is quite
interesting in that it offers alternative routes. But the alternative
routes aren't necessarily monitored via TMC so you might end end going
another way that is worse. I'm very pleased with the car.
