Default VANOS: help!!

Hi guys,
i've a big problem with my Z3 coupè M.
It didn't pass a test for CO, so now it's not regular by law.
At BMW they told me that i had to change VANOS group, but it costs ? 2.800
(with handwork).
They told me it's the first time that this happens to them and they don't
know another way to fix this problem.
Maybe someone had the same problem and fixed it

Hopefully,
Andrea

It's a common problem on that engine. I believe Rolls Royce aerospace
made the vanos gear for the //M engine, it wasn't done terribly well.
There are probably quite a few web pages covering the subject.
