The Windsor Makes a Comeback!
02-21-08: In news this week about the Canadian Auto Workers Union and
a proposed Ford Motor Company project to invest $600 million in the shuttered Windor, Ontario engine plant, telling details were dropped about what they would be building. Buzz Hargrove, president of the Canadian Auto Workers union, says Ford Motor Co. is now weighing a project to reopen the plant that has been the birthplace of the "Windsor" engines longer than most enthusiasts have been alive. The plant closed last November, ending an era. What is more exciting than hearing that the plant could open again is what they plan to build there. Hargrove said this, regarding the proposal: "The best example of that is the 5-litre engine for the Ford plant in Windsor. We have an opportunity to win an engine in that facility. When Ford first started talking to us and the provincial and federal government about it, it was about a $350-million investment which would have led to about 300 jobs being created in a plant that closed in November of last year. And since that time, they've adapted that engine. And they're going to utilize it in more vehicles than they initially planned. And the project now is an over $600-million investment, and possibly close to 600 jobs in the city of Windsor, in a local union, and a community, that are desperate for investment and jobs." This is further scuttle to back up the many rumors that the 2010 Mustang will debut with a new 5.0 liter V8. While this may not be breaking news, it backs up what we have been hearing. The news that the engine is going to be used in more vehicles than initially planned is also alluring. Besides the F-Series and the Mustang, what other vehicles would be used for this engine? Time will tell! --- Patrick |

Probably the last castings out of Windsor before it closed. (no pushrods) The blocks are available through FRPP as the Boss5.0 block. Presumably, if the 5L size makes it into production, it'll be aluminum and 3V. It might also be used in Crown Vics, (taxi, police) SUVs and a Lincoln. rd |

The iron 5L SOHC blocks were cast at the Cleveland plant, which also has been closed recently. Windsor and Cleveland engine plants both closed within a short period of each other ? Kind of makes it a "brave new world" for Ford engines. rd |
