99 M3 burning oil?
I have a 99 M3 Coupe which went lost 3 out of the 8 quarts of oil since
my last oil change (5k miles). It is unlikely that the shop forgot to top of the oil so I am wondering if my car burns oil. I have heard that bimmers do burn more oil than most cars, especially when driven aggresively. Is this true? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. --Kanwar |

Well, since almost all cars take 5 quarts, and yours is 3 qt low on a
requirement of 8, my guess is that somebody didn't put enough in. If you are not absolutely certain that the shop filled it properly, I would work on the assumption they did not fill it. Assuming they did fill it, I would not have bothered to check the level, but as you can see, this is a dangerous assumption. Having said that, you can MAKE SURE it is full, and keep you eye on it. Having said that, if you drive aggressively, then your engine will consume oil, and if you know this, then you need to keep tabs on it. 3 qts is alot though, and it should be either smoking or dripping. If neither is happening, I think you are OK, and you just need to keep an eye on the level.
