Aren't the changes just a bit slow though unless on full throttle?

Not slow, just a bit abrupt, really - once you get used to it, you learn
when it's going to change, or force a change by modulating the pressure
applied by the right foot. (or, indeed, lift off when changing
'manually')

Most people make the mistake of treating it like an auto, rather than
treating it as a manual with robotised gearchange.

(Wonders if this is why Mrs H has broken it....)

Indeed - I tried to get a deal on a 159 JTDm Auto, but no-one wanted to
play ball with me - even on ex-demonstrators.

It's a PITA, I bought the car for a specific reason (company car
allowance, lots of motorway work, but wanted an auto), however, it has
ended up as a 12 mile each way commuter hack, so has probably done an
order of magnitude more gearchanges in half the mileage in Mrs H's
hands.
