Default The best PC simulator?

Hello, what, in your opinion, is the most serious driving simulation
computer game (for PC)?

I'm looking for a game that was developed with attention to actual
physical behavior of cars.

I remember that in my early teens I used to play a game called "Need
for Speed" - its first issue was apparently supported by some serious
analysis on car physics.

I'm also interested in realistic rally simulations. Could you name the
best ones?

Thanks.

Arcade. Though Porshe Unleashed was decent.

Richard Burns Rally
Mobil 1 Rally Championship (older game)

These are all I can think of, off hand.

Yup, can't argue with that list of released sims. Though Mr. can't fly
without a hoover or whatever his name is will probably have something to
say...

Good list.

Personally I'd point people straight at the rFactor, LFS2(alpha), and
Richard Burns Rally demos.

GPL remains the mother of all racing sims, but it can be a bit complicated
to get it from its out-of-the-box state to something that looks halfway
decent.

The GPL 2004 demo plus the tracks and stuff off your original CD works quire
well.

I dunno I seem to remember the physics on the original NFS being fairly
decent for the time, but NFS2 onwards was arcade rubbish with the exception
of Porsche 2000/Unleashed

Agree with the rest though

Thanks for the suggestions - already downloading the demos!

One more issue: which of the autosimulators is the most widely used to
record replays? I.e. people record replays, they're posted on a website
and a sort of league is created.

If anyone is into first-person shooters here, you may know of an online
project of "Quake speedrunning" - a huge database of Quake replays.
They have quite a community there - with records beaten all the time,
people having fun competing, admiring the most skilled and innovative.

The only similar project in autosims that I know of was created for a
Finnish (?) game "Motorhead". I remember it was fun to download those
replays recorded by gamers eager to beat records. BTW, joysticks were
used for most records, i.e. they were a better controller than keyboard
or steering wheel.

So what is the most active community of "autosim replays competition"
online?

I would add Viper Racing.

I'd say, GPL, most likely, right?
