Default 96 buick Roadmaster fuel system question

Half -full gas tank acts as if there is no gasoline left in it i.e. when car
is started it either stalls as if there is only enough gas to run for a few
seconds or doesn't start at all , also when i add extra gallon or two of
gas everything works well car starts and drives w/out any problems.
Fuel gauge shows approx 1/2 and filling up at the gas station adds exactly
1/2 tank to top the tank off.
Any ideas ?

Sounds as if a pickup tube from the fuel pump--in the tank?--has dropped
off. s

That makes sense.
I haven't had a chance to see the inside of a fuel tank with an electric
pump in it. My previous car had a mechanical pump.
I can't believe the price of these pumps and sender units these days
