NFS: Shift - Can't drive in straight line on demo...
I've recently upgrading my ancient (XP2500+ & x800 XT) machine to
something slightly more modern (Q6600 + 8800GT), and am catching up on what I've missed over the last few years. I quite like the idea of NFS: Shift as a sim-lite, and have been fiddling with the demo. However - I CANNOT drive in a straight line unless I turn steering help on. There seems to be some terrible latency in the steering which sees me correcting, over-correcting, and so on as I weave back and forth along the straight. My wheel is an (admittedly ancient) Logitech Wingman Formula Force, connected via the serial-to-usb adapter that it came with. Works fine in other games, such as GPL, RBR and LFS. Is the full version any better on this front? Is my wheel just too old to cope with this game? Do I just have to ignore *any* pretence of it being a sim and turn steering help on? Thanks for any advice. -- Ian Riches Bedford, UK |

NFS: Shift - Can't drive in straight line on demo...
Hi Ian, I admit to having bought NFS:Shift and I played it briefly for a week or so, and as far as I can tell everything worked fine wheel wise (g25 here, otherwise my rig is quite similar to what you describe). Can you borrow another wheel from a local fellow simracer to check if it's a problem with your wheel? Cheers, Uwe |

I'm not aware of anyone 'round my way with a wheel, and have seen complaints elsewhere of lag in the steering from others since my post. Besides, I really don't want to try a new and better wheel like a G25/G27. I could just about afford the wheel, but the divorce would be very expensive ;-) -- Ian Riches Bedford, UK |

No amount of tweaking fixed my problem. If I can't steer on command, or drive a straight line, then the game isn't any good to me. I'm using similar specs as you, and a black without force feedback. -Will |

I'm using a pair of USB joysticks (right to steer, left for throttle / brake), no delay issue here, but I did enable exponential curve on my controller software to deal with the sensitivity of some cars. Some of the cars seem to have yaw sensitivity, but not any of the cars players use for online racing. I haven't heard any complaints from players using G25 or G27 type steering wheels. Shift isn't keyboard or digital controller friendly, so you will need some type of true analog controller (like a wheel). You could trying adjusting steering sensitivity in the game to less than 50% (assuming 50% is linear) to see if that helps. |

Shift - Can't drive in straight line on demo...
I'm using a 9yo Thrustmaster FF wheel and it works fine with shift.
I always go to the garage and reduce the lock to 15 and increase caster to 7, that usually helps somewhat. There is still lag, but drivable. i use the wheel profile for the Thrustmaster F430 so perhaps try one of the logitech profiles. Based on what I've read at various forums, most of the instances of lag are related to video card and graphics settings, not the controller. Try reducing the car detail setting in the game, which seems to have the most effect on frame rates in career mode when starting at the back of a pack of AI cars. |

While you're in msconfig, in advanced, there's mention of the amount of RAM reserved for your graphics card - a kludge really, but some cards only have 1 meg of memory on them - in particular if they are built into the motherboard. That's where I'd start - with any OS or graphics game. |
