New York: Crashed Cops Raced Uninsured, Unregistered Car
Mount Vernon, New York cops caught drag racing in an unregistered,
uninsured car plead guilty to reckless driving.

Two Mount Vernon, New York police officers pleaded guilty Wednesday to
reckless driving after their drag racing caused an injury crash last
year. Officer Robert Burke, 25, had been racing Officer Leonard Cooper,
26 on North MacQuesten Parkway at 6am on April 2. Burke lost control of
the 1990 Ford Mustang he was driving, which jumped a curb and slammed
into a parking meter and fire hydrant. His passenger, a state trooper,
Meredith Govoni, suffered a fractured vertebra. The vehicle was uninsured
and unregistered and mysteriously disappeared shortly after the incident.

<...>

Three other police employees are under investigation, including Robert
Wuttke, who was at the scene, and Officer Thomas Bendo who had been sent
to investigate after receiving resident complaints about the racing.
Bendo did not test the racing officers for DUI, nor did he impound the
illegal vehicle. Part of the incident had been recorded on a nearby
security camera.

---------------------

Once again, special treatment for the cops. An ordinary street racer
wouldn't have escaped that with anything less than a half dozen charges,
some time in the jail until bail was set and posted, and his car siezed if
not 'crushed'.
