OK. I'm starting to get it now!! The part I'm talking about is the Air-con
compressor - the pipes coming in and out must be the coolant pipes. This is
at the front of the engine and is on the right of the above image. The
alternator is behind the engine and low down and hard to get to. Just for my
own sanity - where is the water pump?

I can't find a picture that shows it.

It's not really a pump in the way I think you're imagining it. It's an
impeller that sits *in* the water jacket and forces the water to circulate.

The impeller is inserted into the water jacket and seals using the plate
on which it is mounted. It is driven by the cambelt to the drive pully
that the item is sitting on in that photo.

The whole lot bolts into the front of the engine block

In any event, you're looking at lobbing it at a garage. I'm afraid.

If the aircon compressor is shot, then it needs the gas removing (and
capturing) then the item replaced, and then the system will need re-gassing.

If it *is* the waterpump (damned sure it's not) then it's a full cambelt
change. You could just bring it forward from October I spose.
