Kate,
Maybe. However, the key does turn counterclockwise to the accessory
position and it does turn clockwise to unlock the steering wheel but not
far enough to the ignition on detent position. If one of the spring loaded
rods was bad, I wouldn't think the cylinder would turn at all.

Until it jams up and you cant turn off the hi-beams and everyone is flipping
you the bird as you drive down the road. Other than that, the floor switch
is fun.

Now, we need to know what's wrong with it.

It will have to wait until next weekend. Stay tuned.

Ok, I'm at a loss. I tried to check on the rod at the end of the steering
column (Where the rod goes into the electrical block at lower end of column)
First, How do I get the block off (if it even comes off) and what exactly
am I looking for to see if the rod is lined up properly? The rod does move
back and forth when the key is turned counter and clockwise. As you recall,
it will not turn all the way forward to the ignition on detent.

Does anyone have a schematic?

Lastly, is it possible to put a switch on the starter solenoid; one for Acc
on and another for the Starter. I think that would be much easier than
taking apart the column. Of course, I need someone to tell me which
solenoid terminal does what.

Thanks

If you have Tilt Steering, you'll be needing new linkage where the mechanism
passes through the joint in the steering column.

If you don't have tilt, you still need to work in the same area.

There is a nut in the middle of the steering wheel to remove. You can use a
steering wheel puller to get the wheel off, or you can protect the threads
of the steering column and rap it a few times with a hammer as you pull up
on the wheel with your knees. The puller is far easier, and you can use one
from a parts store with a loaner tool program for free. You can buy one for
under $25.

Once the wheel is off, you will find the steering lock plate -- another
opportunity for a special tool -- that is held on with a circlip.

Next, you find the turn signal switch. (This sounds complicated, but it
takes all of about 15 minutes -- if you have the tools -- to get this stuff
out of the way.) The steering column covers come off and expose the broken
parts to the ignition linkage.

When my Jeep had this problem, I found the parts at the major retailer in my
area, Pep Boys, out on the sales floor in a section filled with HELP Brand
parts. There are lots of different odd parts that you will find in this
section of the store. On my Jeep, if I recall correctly, the parts also fit
the GM Steering Column.

The ignition switch is held on with a single 5/16-head screw (one of those
self-tapping, sheep metal screws).

Personally, I do not think the switch itself is the problem. You'd be lucky
if it was. I think the linkage between the ignition lockset and the ignition
switch has broken.

The rod only fits one way. It comes straight down the side of the steering
column and has a 90-degree bend at the very end that fits into a slot on the
switch. The switch has detents for each position, except START, where it has
a spring loaded return to the ON position.

Joe, my son's XJ had the same problem and the real issue was pretty odd (I
seem to find lots of odd problems!). I pulled the switch cylinder out and
found that the little cap that covers the pins had popped loose on one
corner. It stuck up just enough to catch on a slot in the mount. Pushed
it back in place, popped the edge a couple of times with a center punch to
stake it and it was still working when he sold the Jeep last Spring. You
have to pull the steering wheel and turn switch to get the cylinder out so
you're in there anyway and a replacement ignition lock is pretty cheap if
you don't trust the thing (and you don't mind a batch of mismatched
keys...)..

Thanks Will. I guess I need to quit screwing around and take apart the
steering wheel and see what's up. Thanks again.
