Default 156 1.8 TS COLD START

It's -15 deg C outside.
When I start it in the morning it chokes a while if I press the gas pedal,
like the machine is going to stop.
It doesn't, just drops rpm almost to zero.
After a few minutes it's ok.
What could that be?

It's probably nothing apart form a design issue. -15 is *cold*. Just let
the car warm up before you try to use the gas.

!!!!! 15 deg C cold??????

Thats a decent summer here in the UK...

I have a diesel that has now been through 2 cold snaps (below -5) and
covered in snow a few inches deep - parked up for a few days and still
starts first time without any chuggering...

Gfiegta - did you try pulling the choke out

same problem here from time to time. 15-19 below 0 here in zagreb, croatia
and my 1.8 ts studders for a while, revs go down to almost zero and then
back
to normal. my mech says it's probably one of lambda sensors. i should
have that fixed this month. will let u know of the score.

Lambda sensor has nothing to do with high idle during cold start. It
takes quite a few minutes for the lambda and the engine to heat up for
closed-loop control with lambda.

Can't say much specific about your problems without hooking the car to a
tester, but dirty injectors might be one problem.

Usually during very cold starts _all_ cars are a bit sensitive to
applying gas. So you'll need a minute or so on high idle before taking off.

If you don't have high idle at all, then the problem lies in the
idle-motor or thermosensor for the ECU.

(Going on second week with below -15 temperatures...)

A mechanic says it's the design.
We've tested it thoroughly, all OK.
The mechanic says it just under 30 secs that electronic picks up all
relevant data for the car computer.
It has shown as true. It stutters for under 30 secs.

Hello ALL, and Vlaho,

With the mentioned Cold Start I have no problems up to now here in Split,
where only few days a year temp goes under zero :-)))
Anyhow, I just wanted to say here in public,

You know what is the truth about Alfa's: There is Alfa and there are other
Cars. That is the truth.

p.s. For Vlaho: Alo majstore Alfisto, ima li kakav klub Alfista na
Internetu, znas li? Ima li kakvo mjesto, web stranica vezano za kakvu
razmjenu iskustava, nabavku rezervnih dijelova i tako... ajde, ako ista
znas, javi. Koju Alfu vozis?

Thanks to everybody, nice day to all. Bye

1.8 TS in 156 had problems with cold engine because of old software. If
engine is switched off, then restarted, and after this procedure works
OK, software must be upgraded to new one.
