2007 Explorer XLT Tire Sensors
On our last trip, the tire pressure warning light came on. I stopped and
took the pressure in each tire and it was above the recommended pressure (tires were warm from freeway driving). After I got back on the freeway, the warning light went out. Periodically it would come back on, then go off about 20 minutes later. I took the car in for an oil change today and I asked the mechanic if the magnificent computer in the car would tell him which tire was the problem. He said he didn't think so. He also commented that there were a lot of problems with the Ford tire pressure sensors. When he checked the tire pressures, he said the spare tire pressure was about 20 lbs, so maybe that was the problem. Is there really a sensor on the spare? My wife's 2004 Mountaineer didn't have one on the spare. Tom |

I haven't been made aware of any spare tires with sensors... FWIW, the
sensors "go to sleep" in the abscence of centrifugal force to conserve sensor battery life. Ford is still changing tire pressure sensors but your 07 should have the band mounted sensors locatedin the well of the wheel rim and located 180 degrees from the valve stem. This system has been remarkably trouble free except when some tire buster that doesn't keep abreast of his trade damages a sensor by using improper technique when demounting a tire or breaking a bead. For most of the 07 model year line up, tire pressure sensing functions are in the SJB (smart Junction Box) located usually inside the passenger compartment. A scan tool capable of communicating with proprietary modules is required... having the ability to display live data stream is a plus. All the same, to properly identify a faulty sensor, one would want to retrain the sensors in the correct order in case the tires have been rotated without the benefit of retraining the senor positions.
