Default transfer case and tranny problems - options for resale

as i mentioned in another post, i am about to purchase a ford or chevy
4x4 soos.

i am not trading in my old truck, would rather dress it up a bit and
get more $$$ for it. old trucks down here in texas are a hot item for
the immigrant laborer group.

Transmission:

at random times, maybe twice in a day or maybe once in a week, the
transmission slips out of gear - if i have appreciable rpm at the time
it will re-engage with a huge WHAM, the first time it happened i
thought the thing had fallen out, but it will then keep on going like
nothing happened. i try to keep my speed slow, and if i hear/feel it
slip out i quickly shift into nuetral for a few seconds then back to
drive and all is fine without the bang. however it does and has
happened a bit - questions a

what kind of damage is it doing each time it does this?
for a 232K mile truck, is there an easy/quick/cheap fix to get it
sold? or will it require a total re-build?? i was hoping a simple
clutch replacement may work.

Transfer case:

it is out. what is a typical cost for a used one, and how hard is it
to install? do i need a transmission jack, or could 2 fairly strong
men do it? my son and i are able to do pretty much any medium level
work - water pumps, timing gear, manifolds, etc.

air conditioner:

i replaced the entire system (no small feat) last year. went cheap and
bought the compressor at auto zone and it sounds like its about to
explode. does anyone have experience with this? i have heard that
they can get very noisy but still work fine for a while. i do not want
to replace it, but may anyway just t0o make it more sellable, not that
much work or $$.

so all in all, the truck is in decent cosmetic shape in and out, i am
just hoping its worth the time and expense to dress it up for resale.

Thanks!!
