Can anyone tell me if it is possible to connect to a dedicated internet
server with a computer that is directly connected to that server (LAN)?

Yes this is possible. On the client, click on the blue "+" above the race list
then you can enter the internal ip address of the server. The server will then
show up in the race list.

You can also click on the Settings button and change the "refresh list type"
to LAN. The game should show up there by itself when you refresh. Actually
I just discovered tonight that internet joiners can also choose just LAN and
type my IP address in - the advantage being that just my server is shown so
they don't have to hunt the list.
