Default Cambelt (again!!)

Im getting my cam belt changed in a few weeks and the mechanic
recommended changing the water pump at the same time, he does seem to
be quite particular about his work (which is nice for a change).
Should the pump be change at the same time?

If the water pump fails it is very expensive in labour to replace, but adds
no labour charge whilst the Cam belt is done. If you change belts every
three years it may not be necessary but it gives peace of mind. Also
ensures that the cooling water is all changed at the same time. Had mine
swapped on a 96 Spider as it was 7 years old when the cam belts were
changed. Also check they replace the variator and cam tensioners at the
same time.

I suppose, better safe than sorry.
I think the variator might be on the way out too, my wife said that she
started it twice last week and said it the car shook after starting for
a few seconds and was ok again. It has been ok since, does this sound
like the variator?

A faulty variator makes the engine sound like diesel on start up , then it
disappears after a few seconds. Mine has done this from new and has now done
76000 miles.

dodgy variator on a TS usually gives a bit of a "diesel clatter".
Common wisdom is to change the belts, the variator and the water-pump all
together.
