'01 Chevy Cavalier cigarette lighter/accessory plug unusable?

I've heard (long story) that the lighter/accessory plug on many of the
Cavaliers can't be used for accessory power (blows fuse, perhaps the
plug is defective)?

I can't get access to this car now (long story, don't ask). But
according to one person who works at an auto rental place, this is
typical for these cars.

I find that hard to believe, but want to be prepared to fix it (one way
or another) when I get out there in december.

Any thoughts?
