Default check engine light on Ford Ranger

I have a 95 4cyl,5spd Ford Ranger with 89k miles and the Check Engine light
has come on. The truck runs perfect. What could set off the light? I have a
Haynes book, but they make it sound like for a 95 and on, I won't be able to
check the codes without a scan tool. In fact I can't even find the little
module where you can use a jump wire and turn the key on and watch the
blinks. The Haynes book says on the 93-94 models it's located on the inside
passenger side fender well, but no mention where it might be for a 95.

Can I check the codes myself without the tool? What might set off the Check
Engine light on a 95 Ranger that runs great? I can't seem to find any vacuum
leaks.

Thanks in advance

Gary,
Hawaii

It could be any number of things. Go to your local Autozone &
see if they can't run a scanner.

All vehicles were OBD-II by '96. Some 95's may have the
port. Look for a connector under your steering column.

Check Engine means that a code is being set. Without knowing
the code, you're really shooting in the dark to find the cause.
