Default Gearbox in 1990 Miata

I have a 1990 Miata with 140K miles on it. I use it on a daily basis.
Lately, the gearchange has not been working as smoothly as it used to. One
symptom is that it's now easier to beat the synchromesh when changing gears.
I can avoid this problem by changing from one gear to another more
deliberately. However, the other symptom is more difficult to avoid.
Sometimes I come to a stop and then have difficulty in getting into first
gear. I have to wrestle it in, or maybe start off in second, although even
that is sometimes difficult.

Does anyone know what these symptoms indicate, and what repairs might
cost?

Have you checked your clutch fluid reservoir level?

There's a 99% chance your clutch slave cylinder is leaking. Cheap and
easy to fix.
