Default Starting W/O SmartKey?

'05 Jeep Grand Cherokee: I tried to start the car for a friend (gone for 2 months) with a door key. It would start and kill after about 5 seconds...does this mean the car uses a SmartKey? Thnx!

Correct. The 05 uses a smart-key/transponder.
If you are doing this to keep the battery up I would suggest a cheap
2w solar panel from harbor freight or run it to a trickle charger
every so often.
