A piston was actually deformed, so it had a new (2nd hand with new rings)
piston, the camshaft was so worn one of the valves wasnt opening so it had a
replacement.
Main bearings were changed as well as the camshaft position sensor, all for
£650, I reckon I did OK.

Sounds to me like an engine that's been run very low on oil.

Ive only had it a few months, it could have been me, I was caught out at the
very beginning.
Although its oil use and exhaust smoke always seems excessive, I guess it
was ready to die when I bought it.

It had a good look at while in bits, it looked OK apparently.
