Default Got lots done, but lots of drama!

I took last Friday, and Monday through Wednesday off this week, to try to get something done on my 72 1200 "standard" beetle. Originallu I was having Friday and Monday only....

On Friday I managed to remove the last guard and epoxy enamel the mating surfaces, and the area in behind the running board. The last bits of the body that needed doing! I still have to polish over some of my almost colour matched touch ups, but that's nothing major.

Replaced the rear axle seals and rear brakes on Sunday.

Monday... went to town and got some decent axle seals and replaced them and cleaned all the fresh oil off the new brakes! Grrrr! Stupid seals - they were Elring (supposedly quality) but they could be pushed out with my fingers!

Also installed all new tie rod ends, and pulled the engine.

Lucky I get craploads of leave!

Tuesday, I replaced the engine bay seals with the correct Z shape one - the normal V shaped one doesn't even touch the tinware. I removed the nasty Bugpack exhaust, ready for a stock fweemer with stainless tailpipes 8)

I then fitted my rebuilt 34PICT-3 and followed the weird tuning procedure for it, finished installing the cooling flaps and thermostat (plus the Hoover bit!), fitted the correct DVDA distibutor which I've swapped my electronic ignition module into with new cap and rotor, fitted my new Bosch HT leads, Then put the engine back in.

ALthough I got all this stuff done, I'm glad I'm not a VW mechanic! Talk about Drama!

On Wednesday, the Guy at the hydraulic shop thought he knew better than me/my mate and sold me the wrong size hoses for the remote oil filter. Went back and changed them after my mate that built the engine said "NO WAY!". Got the right ones, then decided to move the filter location, so had to go back to get another length of hose! Grrr.

Sprayed oil over the engine bay after leaving the breather pipe off after filling the oil Grrr

One oil fitting leaked. Grrr

New rotor needed trimming down to clear the electronic ignition. Grrr

Pulley rubs on tinware as oil pump sticks out just a touch too far. Grrr

fan was rubbing on fan shroud - sorted with a bit of tweaking. small Grrr

lowered it down off the hoist... forgot to attach throttle cable! back up and sort that out. Grrr

Still - got it all sorted and went for a drive this afternoon. Just a few little things to do before the WOF inspectionn check 8)

Just have to fit running boards and rear bumper! There can't be too much drama involved with that!

They were still making 1200,s in 1972? In Australia I seem to recall they
stopped around ,66. My first Beetle was the 1300 and it was a 66, not sure
the 1200 was even an option.. Nearly killed myself the first day I owned it
after moving from a grossly understeering series of BMC ( Austin, Morris)
cars. Raised the heart rate somewhat!!.
Elring did use to be good quality. They havn,t moved their manufacturing to
somewhere in Asia have they?

Haha! BMC... didn't each car they made increase the debt!

Dunno if Elring have moved... maybe they were just duds. I fitted Febi swing axle boots too, one one thicker and stiffer than the other too! Weird!

1200 were made for MANY years. Certainly at least well into the 70's. It has no flow through ventilation, the old style blade bumpers (but no overriders - JUST the blade!), no fan - just the old style demister vents and foot vents, small headliner (doesn't cover the pillars or sides of the roof - or where the SINGLE sun visor is mounted - it's all painted steel), rubber mats, 1 speed wipers, just a horn button, no ring or "tabs", just a carboard liner in the "dogbox", no chrome on the running boards or in the window rubbers, etc etc etc :-)

It does a bit..... Still - everything is genarlly easy to get to! 20 minutes to get the engine out isn't bad :-)

Oh yeah, it's German assembled! They were very expensive here is New Zealand by then - it was pretty well over for VW for a number of years.

Your,re right with BME cars increasing debt. ie namely mine!!. Snapped
axles, collapsing diffs, rust, 1st gear/diff ratio so low it was really a 3
speed box.
Bodies basically a good design but mechanicals - ugh.
Don,t ever recall seeing that "base" beetle as you described over here.
Likewise early 70,s on beetle sales fell off.

Haha - sounds like a great car!

My neighbour has 2 Austin Healey 3000's, and MG convertible and a Rover RV8. They are all immaculate, and he makes jokes all the time about them being old piles of English crap :-)

My Beetle also developed a fuel leak from the hard line in the engine bay - replace with 350 PSI hose now :-D Maybe it's cursed or something!

BTW I used to do regular maintenance on a mexican built 1988 1200 std
beetle back in Finland. So yea they made them forever.

1988 they imported the last 14-or so aircooled VW beetles to Finland.
They were a special limited set, for some reason. Before that they had
not imported any since 1975.

Sweet! I'd like a really late one, just for bragging rights! Mine does actually have a 1600 TP in it, but everything else is pretty stock, or close to it. I just need the correct rear bumper and a couple of little bits.

Sounds about right
If anything can go wrong, it will.
If nothing can go wrong, it _definitely- will.
When it seems the worst is over, it isn't.

Still, of all the possible cars one could choose from, what be more likely
to get you through a trip from South Africa to the tib of Siberia?

I love VWs. I suspect we all do.

Great story Allan.
