Default starting problem with toyota highlander

hello
i am in a very tight spot here and would really appreciate some advice.
we came out this morning to get in the car and found that it wouldn't
start.
it is making a rapid clicking noise when the key is turned. we are
guessing this is a starter issue and wonder if anyone thinks this could
be the problem. the battery seems to be ok as the radio, wiper,
lights, etc... are working fine. could it be a fuse?
i am visiting my brother in Canada and really need to get home on
Monday. we can't find a garage open and are just wanting to get some
idea of what in the world is going on.

This clicking occurs in fast intervals?

The clicking noise you hear is the starter solenoid. It is clicking because
the battery is not supplying enough voltage to turn the starter. The battery
may still be strong enough to operate the lamps, but not enough to turn the
starter. This could be due to a weak or faulty battery or even a poor
connection somewhere in the battery cables. You might try disconnecting the
battery cables and cleaning the connections. You could get the car jump
started with a set of jumper cables and another vehicle or you could take
the battery out and bring it to some place like AUTO ZONE or Wal-Mart to
have it recharged and tested. If it is not a bad battery, then you need to
find out what caused it to have a low charge. That might be as simple as a
light left on over night or could be due to a faulty alternator or charging
system problem. If you belong to an auto club or have road side assistance
on your insurance policy they will send someone out to get your car started
for you. If you need more detailed instructions on how to perform the
necessary steps to diagnose or fix the problem, post back, but be sure to
include the year make and model.

Good luck

=============================
Common cure for these is to simply replace the copper contact "studs"
inside the solenoid.
They carry the full amperage when starting, and wear over time.

This is a common occurence at the auto shop where I work and it
usually means a weak battery as others have stated. The noise occurs
because when you turn the key to start the solenoid windings get 12
volts or so which is enough to energize the windings to push the pinion
gear into the flywheel and to close the contact to the starter motor.
But when the contacts close the starter motor will pull anywhere from
150 amps for a 4 cylinder to 250 amps for a v8engine. If the battery
is weak this amount of current lowers the voltage to the solenoid
windings too much to keep the pinion gear inthe flywheel and the
contact to the starter motor closed so the contact opens. This cuts
the large current to the starter motor so the solenoid now has enough
voltage to close again. This repeats itself over and over and you hear
a rapid clicking noise.
Usually if you hear just one click it could be the starter though
sometimes it is also a bad battery though I can't explain that one.

An extremely common failure with Toyota starters are the contacts. If
checking out the battery condition proves nothng wrong, the contacts are at
fault.

The dealer sells a "stud kit" to replace the contacts with new ones. They
are easy to replace...once the starter is out.
