Default brake pedal squeal

'07 Cobalt LS, 60K miles.

Recently developed a 'rubber' squeal/squeak (as opposed to a
'metallic' one) when the brake pedal is depressed. Sound comes from
under the dash. One URL [1] says to replace the brake fluid. (Doesn't
say why.) Other threads talk about possibly a leaking master
cylinder.

Any experience/info? Thanks.
