Default Aluminum Chassis with Fiberglass Bodywork

There are two cars with an aluminum chassis and SMC bodywork.

This is the Corvette chassis:

http://www.sae.org/servlets/dlymags/....jpg&alttxt=C7 A-pillar detail.JPG

Then this view shows the one-piece frame channel from front-suspension-to-rocker-panel-to-rear-suspension actually tieing into something bigger at the rear:

And then this link explains the concept of bulkheads (castings) holding frame rails (and this is how Ferrari's, Lamborghini's, recent production Ford GT's, and Audi R8's are built and also how carbon fiber tubs work):

This link explains the SMC bodywork:

This link explains why SMC bodywork is only 30% lighter than steel bodywork:

Here is the Lotus Evora chassis:

Here is a link that suggests the Evora as a race car platform:

Here is a link that suggests the Corvette as a race car platform:

Here is a link to the SRT Viper which has a steel chassis and then bodywork of carbon fiber, aluminum, and SMC:

Here is a link to the Ford GT aluminum chassis:

However, Ford GT's, Ferrari's, Lamborghini's, and R8's have aluminum bodywork instead of SMC bodywork.

Of course, carbon fiber tubs are possible on the most advanced models

My uncle always bought cheap black tires for his Valiant and then
carefully painted white sidewalls on them with oil-based housepaint.
It looked a lot better than you'd expect.

Used to use special crayon type markers for marking "Goodyear" etc.

Back to the present:

The end of the short wheelbase Elise disappointed a lot of Lotus fans but the Evora with a wheelbase of 101.4" could actually be competition for the Corvette.

As for the Corvette, new close-out C6 Corvettes can be found on Autotrader at about $39,600 . Those are steel chassis and SMC bodywork.
